Literary Devices
Literary devices, also called literary techniques, are methods writers use to convey a specific effect. They can be also used in a number of ways to enhance the quality of your writing, and understanding their use certainly helps deepen your enjoyment of reading. Below is a short video introducing the concept of the paradox as a literary device.
What other examples of literary device can you think of? In my previous essay on Purple Threads, I pointed out that Jeanine Leane uses the literary device of an allegory to depict how the local reverend was out of touch with indigenous views of spirituality. However, the best way to learn something is to explain it to someone else. After watching the video, think of a device you would like to learn more about, or have learnt throughout the term and struggled to understand. There is a list of devices here if you need refreshing. Your challenge is to then post a video reply with your own understanding of the definition of your chosen device.
